The beret – A soft round flat crowned cap usually of woven, hand knitted wool, crocheted cotton, wool felt or synthetic fibres. Mass production began in the 19th century in France and Spain and worn as part of a military uniform (wikipedia)
All very interesting but what is the appeal of the beret after all these years?. The middle of the 20th century saw it explode onto the fashion scene. It has long been associated with artists, bohemians and beatniks. Coco Chanel and Briget Bardot have both worn the beret but what is still the attraction?
My first beret was navy blue pure wool. I wore it for years even when the stalk (the little bit of felt at the top) fell off, I continued to wear it until alas I recently lost it somewhere in Shepherds Bush.
The allure of the beret is that you can make it your own. It’s up to you how you wear it, so let’s look at the options,
- Back of the head, band on the hairline, stretching the back of the beret so it sits at the back of the head – warning, not particularly secure, may fall off!
- Classic French style, with a slight tilt. Position half way up forehead, tuck in the brim, adjust fabric to the side to achieve a flattering tilt, voila!
- My preferred style is pulled down over the forehead, ears and back of head. warm and toasty.
- For more of a modern, edgy look, a black or a leather beret can look great with a pair of chunky Dr Martens and a leather jacket.
- A beret made from a lighter fabric can work well with a summer dress or trouser suit during the spring and summer months.
What is the appeal?
The price, you can spend as little or as much as you can afford. I have picked up some amazing ones in my local charity shops for as little as £2.00 Primark are currently selling them in a host of great colours for £5.00.
My friend Monika modelling her recent primark purchases
- They keep you really warm, depending on your preferred material the snug fit ensures your whole head and back of the neck is covered.
- They are versatile, in my opinion berets can be worn with pretty much anything. For a smarter, dressier look (think Coco Chanel) It can look great with a vintage brooch and a smart blazer or jacket.
- It can add a pop of colour to any outfit
I recently picked up this little gem in the British Heart Foundation charity shop, brand new with a lovely embellishment for £7.00. A great replacement for my recent loss!
I love my Cath Kidston beret bought as a christmas present for me a few years ago, the crochet design gives it a wonderful vintage feel. https://www.cathkidston.com/en-gb/
